...the Grant Russell Quartet features four of the most dynamic performers in the Uk. Raw uncompromising jazz with an aggressive commitment to improvisation led music within the traditional framework of strong tunes, both original and standard. However there is nothing standard about thIs quartet. Whilst still working from a traditional approach to jazz performance all the performers have worked at the highest international level in a plethora of genres and bring all that experience to every tune. The sum is definitely greater than the parts.
Grant Russell was born into music. His father the notorious Dixieland bass player and band leader Ron Russell gave him an early introduction to music through his own bands performances and from the numerous international artist he featured at his Pub and jazz venue The Walnut Tree in Kent. Showcasing artists as prestigious as Joe Pass and Barney Kessel to name just two.
Grant excelled at Piano and Double age from a young age later going to study the later alongside composition at the Royal Northern College of Music.
After graduating Grant began a prestigious career as a freelance bassist, working with some of the best ensembles, bands and musicians around. Playing to the highest standard in all genres from classical to jazz, theatre shows to rock gigs, trip hop to folk and everything in-between. He is rightly acclaimed as one of the foremost bass players of his generation and was a founder member of Beats N' Pieces big band and the mercury nominated GoGo Penguin.
His love and integrity for Jazz is what fuelled his desire to start his own quartet. Featuring his own arrangements and compositions with the finest musicians available on the scene.
